Design Forecast 2023

By: Anna Popov

Conceptually rich interiors are the interiors that I love to peruse on social media and in design books and magazines. Conceptually rich interiors are the ones where you look at a photograph and can feel the essence of what it would be like to live there. Conceptually rich interiors offer the elements it takes to create a stunning, balanced interior that enhances the function with beauty and consideration. Conceptually rich interiors are the interiors of 2023, and we plan to embrace that the IBP way.

YES, IT’S MY NANA’S PIECE

Mixing eras is the new buzz word surrounding the emergence of design styles that merge old and new. The last few years have brought to light that you do not have to pick a ‘theme’ and run with it. In fact, the opposite is true, that the allure of a space can be in the mixing, layering and merging of eras, origins and modern design practices with classic design elements – it is honestly so exciting to be a part of. So, dust off Nana’s old vase and give it a try; it may just have the power to influence the direction of an entire room.

HOMES THAT ACTIVATE THE SENSES

Interior design has always been about feeling. It can look amazing, work great and tick all the boxes but how do you feel when you are there? It has to feel good, both in a warm and fuzzy way and in a tactile way. The design world is latching onto that and making it more accessible to everyone. Sculptural furniture, bold shapes, irregular forms are options that were hard to find before and here in a big way in 2023. Couple that with the tactile quality of materials such as plastered walls, state, natural stone, clay tiles, terrazzo, terracotta, velvet, leather and boucle, homes are becoming bolder, more unique and multi-dimensional and these are the homes that activate the senses.

A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OUTDOORS

Merging inside and outside has been a trend for some time but a fresh, playful approach to getting close to nature will be the new focus for 2023. Think of using architectural elements such as the aspect of the building, its surrounding environment, strategic window placement, full height window walls and nana doors that create an extension of your living space to the outside. Once out there, we have so many options from outdoor movie theaters, Japanese soaking tubs, fire pits, a cluster of colorful hammocks to sensory gardens, multi-tiered planting, Zen gardens and outdoor furniture that looks and feels like its indoor counterparts. A deeper relationship with the outdoors is on the horizon.

CHOOSE CAREFULLY AND MAKE IT LAST

Be deliberate about what you bring into your home; it is that simple. That does not mean you need to embrace minimalism, clean counters, and a life of perfection but rather you should embrace a life where your possessions are useful, important, meaningful, and lasting, no matter how many you choose to have. The pandemic forced us to appreciate the simple things in life and we will see that concept take hold even more in the coming years.

For 2023, we plan to stick to our values, develop our design work, stay true to our tried and tested methods whilst welcoming a healthy dose of new ideas and newly forged paths – onwards and upwards we go.
