Design Forecast 2024

By: Anna Popov

As we venture into 2024, the world of interior design continues to evolve, reflecting broader cultural shifts, technological advancements, and an ever-growing desire for personalization in our living spaces. At Interiors by Popov, we have always prided ourselves on staying ahead of the curve, anticipating changes, and embracing new ideas whilst staying true to our design philosophy. In this edition of our Design Journal, we delve into the trends we see shaping interior design in 2024, highlighting the continuations from previous years (see our 2023 forecast HERE) and forecasting the fresh waves set to influence our spaces.

We think furniture and decor featuring curved and organic shapes will continue to show up in 2024. Softening the lines of interior spaces; circular sofas, irregular tables, flowing forms and innovative shapes that challenge conventional design norms are bringing energy and personality to spaces. We see homeowners embrace these forms more often when they show up in our presentations.

Homeowners are increasingly valuing unique, handmade items over mass-produced goods. (we have a whole other blog on this topic HERE) Expect to see a surge in artisanal furniture, handcrafted ceramics, and bespoke decor that tell a story and add character to residential spaces: embracing imperfections and a more relaxed approach to interiors as a whole.

Sustainability has become more than just a trend; it’s a way of life, especially here in the PNW. In 2024, eco-friendly design elements such as recycled materials, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and sustainable furniture will continue to gain prominence. Homeowners are coming to us prioritizing eco-conscious choices to reduce their carbon footprint from the get-go. This is pushing the design and construction industry to evolve and find conscientious solutions (we have a whole blog on this topic too HERE).

The connection between humans and nature remains a strong influence in interior design in 2024. Biophilic design principles, such as incorporating natural materials, indoor plants, and large windows to maximize natural light, will continue to be a key focus. The relationship between the homes we live in and the outdoor space that surrounds us is a priority for most people these days.

Open floor plans and adaptable living spaces that allow for seamless transitions between different activities will persist in popularity. Multifunctional furniture and smart storage solutions will play a crucial role in optimizing our homes footprint. As the line between work and home life continues to blur, we foresee a rise in hybrid spaces that are designed to be multifunctional – think home offices that double as cozy retreats or kitchens that serve as meeting spaces.

Earth-inspired hues such as terracotta, forest green, and warm neutrals will take center stage in 2024. These colors evoke a sense of grounding and harmony, creating inviting and cozy interiors, and are strongly influenced by the push for biophilic design we mentioned earlier. Rather than heavy, overwhelming versions of these colors, think muted hues and integration with soft neutrals and modern textures.

A bold departure from minimalism, maximalism embraces vibrant colors, patterns, and textures. (another blog topic of ours HERE). Expect to see eclectic combinations of furniture, wall coverings, and accessories that express individuality and personality. This is not a free-for-all to add unnecessary amounts of items to a space. We believe maximalism lies in the careful decision about what you want to see in your home daily. It is an intentional style that when approached correctly, can be elegant, tasteful and homely.

Minimalist design, characterized by clean lines and a clutter-free environment, will continue to thrive. Neutral color palettes, simple furniture, and a “less is more” approach will remain relevant as there will always be those of us seeking a sense of calm and serenity in their homes. (and you guessed it, we have a blog about this too HERE). However, following on from the warm minimalism that IBP embraces on the regular, color is making its way into the minimalist world. Yes, you can have a clutter-free living room and want colorful pillows too!

The integration of smart home technology will continue to evolve. Seamless tech solutions that enhance convenience and energy efficiency, from voice-activated lighting to integrated sound systems are on the rise. As technology becomes more sophisticated, smart home systems that seamlessly integrate into our living spaces will enhance comfortability and functionality across the board.

Design elements from around the world will continue to inspire interiors and this makes us all here at IBP so happy! Patterns, textiles, and artifacts from various cultures will be used to create diverse and eclectic living spaces. Interior design is a reflection of the environment that surrounds us and with the world becoming more connected, these global influences and traditions are gaining traction.

As we navigate through 2024, the trends in interior design reflect a blend of continued movements from past years and exciting new directions. At IBP, we believe that understanding these trends is about more than keeping up with the latest styles; it’s about how these elements can be thoughtfully incorporated into designs that reflect the personalities and lifestyles of our clients. From the boldness in color and form to the seamless integration of technology, each trend offers an opportunity to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply personal and functional. As always, the key is to find the right balance – embracing new ideas while staying true to timeless principles of good design.
