Design Inspirations from the IBP Team

By: Anna Popov

As designers, we need to always be on the lookout for inspiration and ideas. We all use visual platforms to increase our awareness of new styles, interesting details and even design trends. As a team of designers with varied and interesting backgrounds, we all have our most-loved design classics that continue to influence our work and inform our individual design style.

I sat with the team recently and asked about their influences. It is so interesting to hear how they connect their experiences to their passion for design. Most great designers have a love for the design industry in its entirety; from furniture pieces to art, lighting to fashion, products to architecture.

Here’s a glimpse into what we, as the IBP design team are inspired by in our work.

Tatiana

I love Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, the beauty and elegant proportions have always appealed to me. I also love the modern aspect of the Ghost Chair by Phillipe Starck and of course, you can’t go wrong with an Eames Lounge Chair!

Tomo

I like the Japanese architect Tadao Ando and I have always admired the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and George Nelson, especially his Coconut chair. I have a special place in my heart for the Acari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi. I had one of these lights growing up. My dad bought them when I was little.

Erica

One of my all-time favorite furniture designers is Pierre Augustine Rose. His simple but captivating designs never fail to amaze me.

Caelin

Vladimir Kagan is one of my favorite furniture designers. I also really admire the architect, Paul McClean. He designs beautiful contemporary homes you’d see in LA with tons of glass and natural elements.

Yingfei

“The best way to predict the future is to design it” by Buckminster Fuller. This quote reiterates to me that as designers, we have the power to effect change.

Luis Barragan’s House and Studio has had a huge influence on me ever since design school. His work, framed in the context of the modern movement, was a big eye-opener that it is possible to merge the traditional with modern vernacular elements. His work instilled in me that when working on an interior, synergy with its architecture should never be overlooked.

So there you have it; a brief snapshot of where we draw our ideas and influences from and the interesting ways we become and evolve as designers. We are always learning, that never ends but I love to hear what lies beneath and happy to share that with you from time to time.

Lastly, I will leave you with my favorite quote related to design. This quote is by a software engineer named Paul Graham and I think it aligns with my design philosophy perfectly. Here it is: “When you’re forced to be simple, you’re forced to face the real problem. When you can’t deliver ornament, you have to deliver substance”
