‘An unconventional shade for an unconventional time Pantone’s Color of The Year, Viva Magenta 18-750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.’

Every year since we started our blog back in 2019, our first blog post of the year has always been dedicated to the Pantone Color of the Year. If you are not familiar with it, Pantone is the universally recognized world authority on color. Their Pantone matching system is a color standardization system that assists in color matching and identification in the design industry across the board. It consists of approximately 1,900 solid colors. Yes, 1,900 solid colors! Who knew there could be so many colors out there. As designers, we talk about color in a way that sounds like gibberish to most people but hear me out – we have some things to say about the 2023 Color of the Year – Viva Magenta!

VIBRANT WITH POWER AND GRACE

Let’s start with the name – Viva Magenta; it is just so fun to say! It sounds like an uprising; like a joyous, uplifting chant from a group of people waving flags getting ready to change the world. It evokes the Muse song ‘Uprising’ to me, which is quite fitting given the things that are going on in the world these days. Pantone says ‘Three years deep into a pandemic, facing a war, an unstable economy, social unrest, supply chain breakdowns, and mounting climate change, we need to heal. And still, we need to find the motivation to continue. Here, Viva Magenta cloaks us in both power and grace, and sends us out into the world with the verve we’ve yearned for.’ Same, Pantone, same.

So, what do we think of the color? We think it’s beautiful. It may not be the first color you would think of to incorporate into an interior design scheme, and we definitely would not recommend you go straight to the paint store to buy a few gallons and paint it on your walls, but we do see a place for it and here is why. Color ignites us, and this color is vibrant and strong without being aggressive. It lies perfectly between warm and cool and because of that, its vibrance is balanced with a tone of calm. In the right instance, Viva Magenta can bring an element of power and grace to an interior that we cannot wait to see unfold over 2023.

A HINT OF GLAMOR

Being neither warm nor cool, Viva Magenta offers endless combinations, specifically in the world of fashion. To demonstrate how versatile this color can be, I grabbed my basket of scarves, paired them with my favorite magenta blouse and the results speak for themselves.

Although a softer, natural palette is still our favorite, we are in love with Viva Magenta and think that 2023 might just be the year we decide to use it. We are on the lookout for stunning art, modern sculptural vases and storage items, textiles, glass, ceramics and more to bring a touch of Viva Magenta to our work. Watch this space!
