THE PERFECT RUG

By: Anna Popov

As designers, we know that finding the perfect rug for a space is the catalyst for all our soft furnishing choices when creating a cohesive design scheme. Rugs exist on a different plane to almost every other soft furnishing that we choose, as they sit directly on the floor and play (an important!) background role. Like other flooring choices they are at the beginning of the layering process that makes a room feel curated, considered and grounded. Take a peek at some of the considerations we take into account when choosing rugs for our spaces.

TO RUGS, WITH LOVE

Once we decide that a rug is the right choice for any given space, it becomes the centerpiece of the other choices we need to make in soft furnishings for a room. Whether it be drapery or throw pillows or the perfect fabric choice for a feature sofa, they all need to work in tandem with the rug choice. In doing this, it can also become clear that our initial choice is the wrong one and we need to go back and reconsider. It all evolves together and only when we feel everything is purposeful and working together is a design scheme finalized.

TEXTURE AND MATERIALITY

Whether it be wool, silk or synthetic, the make-up of a rug has major implications on how it feels, functions and looks. We love wool rugs as they repel water and are resistant to stains yet still soft, opulent and easy to clean. Wool also has amazing options when it comes to creating texture and color. We sometimes use wool blends and other materials too depending on the requirements of the design.

THE ESSENTIAL SIDE KICK

Essential to the functionality, longevity and comfort of any rug is the rug pad! Yes, the lesser-known sidekick of your beautiful, high-quality rug is an equally high-quality rug pad. Believe the hype and always say yes to the rug pad.

USER COMPATIBILTY

A big part of the decision process when choosing a rug is where it is being placed and what are the requirements of the people who use this space. In an entry, a rug should be durable, in a loving room; soft and comfortable, in a bedroom; comfy under foot, in a dining room; easy to spot clean. Planning out what is important to you in how you use your home makes for better choices all round.

SUSTAINIBILITY AND INTEGRITY

For centuries, quality rugs have been made by hand from sustainable and renewable resources. We prefer to specify rugs that are not chemically processed but use natural dyes and eco-friendly practices. These towns and villages are often the sole contributor of the economic success of an area, so fair pay and good working conditions really matter.

HAVE FUN WITH IT

There are so many options in color, pattern and quality out there. Rug design has become an art form and we are so here for it! We have some amazing rug designers and vendors that we work with, and we think they are the BEST! In saying that, although it may feel like you are placing a piece of art on the floor and then proceeding to walk all over it, we think your rug should be lived with and enjoyed. Roll on it with the kids, sit on it for game night with friends, and stare at its beauty every chance you get.
